Review: I've had a few of these, but this is the first that ticks all of the boxes, easy to install, no faffing around downloading extra hard to find drivers from suspect sites.. just works, and works well with 1Password too..

Review: TL;DR - The VeriMark Guard models (USB-A and USB-C) do not allow you to sign into your Windows account because they are not compatible with Windows Hello. I'm returning mine and getting a VeriMark IT instead. The listing includes five separate models of fingerprint scanner: 1. the VeriMark Guard USB-A 2. the VeriMark Guard USB-C 3. the VeriMark 4. the VeriMark Designed for Surface 5. the VeriMark IT I bought the more expensive VeriMark Guard USB-A model thinking it could do more than the other models. For example, the Guard is cross-compatible with Mac and Linux machines as well as Windows. My primary reason for wanting it, though, was to be able to sign into Windows without typing my password every time. It turns out that the Guard cannot do this at all. I started out by plugging in the VeriMark Guard and set it up according to the instructions on the Kensington website. The instructions were easy to follow and this setup all went smoothly. I added three fingerprints, and the VeriMark Guard was very good at recognising my fingerprints when I used it to sign into my security key management settings. It works very quickly, and from any angle I tested. From my limited testing I can say that the VeriMark Guard is very good at what it is meant to do. Good quality material and easy to use. When I logged out of my account I was given no option to login using my newly setup fingerprint scanner. At first I thought I might need to install drivers for it, and because there are drivers for the other models, but not for the VeriMark Guard, I spent some time trying to track down the correct driver and install it. Still, no matter what I installed, no biometric drivers showed up in my Device manager. It was never clear whether I had managed to install the device correctly or not, hence my low-ish rating for ease of installation. I gave up and contacted support. I spent half an hour talking to Kensington technical support, and they were very helpful, but ultimately told me that the standard VeriMark or VeriMark IT would be able to login to Windows, but not the VeriMark Guard. This is because the VeriMark Guard is not compatible with Windows Hello, but the other two are. I can't blame the listing entirely for my confusion here, but I do think that presenting the Guard models along with the others is a bit misleading. I think that it needs to be made clearer to customers that the VeriMark Guard models cannot be used to sign into a Windows device the same way the others can. The fact that customer reviews and questions for all of these different models appear together adds to the confusion. It is sometimes difficult to know if a problem is specific to one model or common to all of them unless the reviewer specifies which model they bought. Maybe I could have realised that the VeriMark Guard wouldn't be able to sign me into windows if I had known what information to look for on the page, but honestly, I didn't know what Windows Hello was when buying this fingerprint scanner, so I had no way of knowing that I had to ensure the scanner was compatible with Windows Hello to be able to sign into a windows account. Signing into Windows seems like the obvious primary function of any fingerprint scanner to me, so it never crossed my mind that a fingerprint scanner would not have this functionality. I just thought that the other features with the Guard were nice add-ons. Based on this experience, I get the impression that Kensington products are of good quality, but it is important to know what you're looking for in a product. Because I was happy with the quality of the product I got, it just didn't do what I needed it to, I'm going to replace it with another Kensington fingerprint scanner. I'm going to return my VeriMark Guard and get a VeriMark IT instead.
