Review: I purchased this beginning of this year but unfortunately was a faulty device. Could not even set it up. Suspect Disks or controller faulty. Had to return it and got full refund from supplier, no fuss. I was kind of put off after that, considering I was new to Synology. So I played with other Free NAS solutions and after 6 months, decided to give Synology a try again, having heard only good news about them. Here is my observations. So to start, this time round I got a working product. So good start. I took my time at each step, thinking about the options available during setup. Install of Hard disks was very simple. No screws / No tools required. I had 2 x 4TB Seagate Ironwolf drives. So in theory, the way I was planning on using it (Raid 0), would give me 8TB total, unformatted. I know the actual useable space will be somewhat less. Plug it all in and power up, and install DSM - Was simple and straight forward. Through the process you need to assign name to your NAS and create Synology account and Admin account for NAS. The instruction that came in the box stops here. But plenty of instructions and help files both online and within DSM that are very useful. Next I assigned static IP to the NICS and also created "Bond" for Link aggregation. Both my NICS were showing 1000Mbps. After I Bonded them, the Bonded NIC showed 2000Mbps. You don't have to bond them, but since this model has two network ports, I thought, why not. Next, created a Volume and pool. I configured the two 4TB drives as RAID 0, No redundancy but I am ok with that. Formatted with Btrfs. In DSM the actual available space to me at this stage was 6.98TB. Wow, I was not expecting a whole terabyte to disappear but it is what it is. I knew I would lose around 700GB to 800GB after formatting. So not too far out. Then I left the NAS alone to do its thing. It was busy verifying my RAID 0 and doing consistency check. Although you can carry on working, I wanted to leave it alone to complete that. Not sure how long but at the speed it was going, I think it took about 5-6 hours (guess). Next day, raid stuff all completed nicely, I created a shared folder and encrypted it. Next created couple of users and provided permission to the share. Tested connection to share from Windows 10 - all good. Now my NAS was ready. You can plug a USB drive in the front and use the File Station in DSM to copy files to your Share. This would probably be the quickest. But beware, if like me you have a bit locker encrypted USB drive, it will not work. DSM doesn’t know how to unlock bit locker drives. So my only option was to plug the USB on my windows 10 machine and copy the data across the LAN to the NAS Share. Copy 1, I managed to copy ~3.8GB/min. (Mixture of lots of small file as well are large ones). copy 2, I copied ~5GB/min. (mostly Large files of between 1GB to 20GB). Copy 3, I copied ~5GB/min (mostly 1GB files). By now I was fairy familiar with my way around DSM. It's fairly easy to use once you get the hang of it. Disks go into hibernation when not in use, that’s great, although I have read about perhaps turning that feature off for NAS longevity. Not sure, there is mixed information about it. You can set the idle time before hibernation. You can also add schedules to shut down the device each night and switch on each morning, etc. Main purpose accomplished and so far I am very happy with it. The NAS performance seems fairly good on my 1Gps network. I still have stuff to explore in control panel to see what useful things can be made use of. One thing I did see was the ability to choose fan speed. There are 3 settings, Full speed, cool and quiet. By default it was set to quiet. I changed it to the middle one, cool mode, and that’s supposed to increase the noise as the fan spins faster, but I could not notice any noise difference. Seems fairly silent. I also want to explore some apps/tools. As advertised there are plenty of Apps/Tools you can install. I don’t know where I will start but I have plans to explore Plex, Moments/Photo station/Media server, Surveillance Station, WebServer Apacche/PHP, Vitual machines. I have no idea what will/will not be possible, but am new to it so looking forward to it. I'll probably need a memory upgrade too but yet to try that.

Review: So, the hardware is good quality. I went for the 20TB Seagate solution and the drives aren't noisy like reviews I read of cheaper drives. Setup was super simple (watched a NASCOMPARES YouTube video on how to configure things + one official Synology video). The actual server software is great. Clean UI and easy to use. But it has to be said that Synology's "DS Video" streaming media software is not so good. It looks good but I literally can't get it to play any videos. I installed their "DS Files" app and that's fine. I can open any video I have and Chromecast it, but for whatever reason their actual app for video streaming just doesn't work. This isn't a knock on the hardware though and also there's other software like Plex (that I haven't tried as DS Files was sufficient, although I may try DS Files on my Google TV too). Now I marked the value for money at a 3 star simply because holy smokes nearly £800 and I've got a harddrive that connects to my network. Yes there's lots of tools that I could use but I already have viable cloud solutions that I don't feel the need to replace. With that said, considering I just wanted a network connected harddrive that I could access my videos and Chromecast them, I could arguably have gone for the cheaper j series with smaller and cheaper harddrives. But I picked what I did because of convenience and a want for the best quality I could afford, and something that would give me an opportunity to grow into the tool rather than buy something cheaper that I hit the ceiling on too quickly. So that 3 star 'value for money' rating is based on my own use case, where as for other people the value for money is likely to be much greater. Ultimately I'm happy with the purchase, but that's because I'm in a lucky position and able to spare that amount of money on something like this.
