Review: I run this SSD in a Thunderbolt 4 case by ACASIS that I also bought on Amazon. The combination is perfect for my needs. I do video editing in FCPX on my 16” MacBook Pro M1 Max and this SSD is perfect for my needs. I did have to add more thermal transfer tape than came with the case to get full contact as this SSD runs hot without adequate thermal transfer.

Review: I was a big fan of Samsung drives, having had a challenging failure of a drive from another very major manufacturer. I really like the Samsung Magician software that gives you a lot of options and information about the drive and also enables easy data transfer including cloning of C drive. I was at the point where I would only buy Samsung SSDs and my current new rig has a 850 Evo (250Gb), 860 Evo (1Tb), 980 Pro (2Tb) and 990 Pro (1Tb). The first 2 are from my old PC but still work well. I paid a little more to get the C drive of my newly built computer onto the 990 Pro as this is a key component in any machine and I tend to keep my PCs for many years so I figured it was worth buying the best. This is what I have learnt using the Samsung Magician and Crystal Disk Mark software. After a month of use, the 990 Pro is generally slower than the 980 Pro. The 990 Pro did reach its stated performance parameters but after a month of light use no longer does so and seems to be getting slowly worse. Specifically the sequential read/write speeds are dropping to around 3,000 to 5,000 MB/s (lower than the 980). The random speeds are doing better. I am also aware of reports that the percentage health, meaning the percentage of drive life remaining is in some cases dropping more rpaidly than expected. This information is available in Samsungs own monitoring software. The 990 Pro has a very large stated drive life at 600 terabytes written. Some users are reporting a rapid fall off in drive life. Mine has 4TB written and is showing 1% drive life used which rounded up seems about right. I am reading reviews saying Samsung will not replace drives where this is happening, and actually I do not even want a replacement as I believe there may be a fundamental issue although it is not clear whether the drive life issue is just a reporting glitch or actually represents real life expectancy reduction. I am a bit sorry to write this review but it is an honest review as you can see from the test results. I have the drive on standard mode and am not doing other tasks whilst running the tests. I have tried 'Full performance mode' and this made it slower. I like the fact that the expression on the character in the Crystal Bench Mark Software image rather sums up my thoughts on the matter. I would tend to advise people to stick with the 980 Pro model which is slight cheaper and seems more solid.
