Review: I originally ordered an 882 from Amazon; got in to some availability difficulties and ended up working directly with the reseller to source a TVS-672, which I've now owned for about 2 years. The basics: a very robustly made, compact and extremely well-designed SOHO NAS for small offices or a demanding home user. I chose to equip mine with a set of 6 WD 12Tb "Red" drives, as a single RAID-6 volume, giving me about 46Tb formatted. This is a quiet, high-performance and easy-to-use NAS with a lot of rich features to automate and take the strain from data management. As I try to do with reviews, here are some positive and negative points:- Positive + Superbly well engineered and built... Easy to set up and add drives with keyless drive bay access... Easy to upgrade RAM, with upgrade slots being directly accessible from within the bay area + Good selection of useful features... Enough RAM to serve demanding workloads, 10GbE connectivity, superb user interface (via web browser) + Good security, including regular software updates that install seamlessly + Rich administration options ... Quota Management, scheduled batch jobs, remote backup, a stack of useful software extras (including MySQL Server, Squid Proxy, and a host of others), all click-to-install from the QNAP "Store" + Near-silent performer - mine sits 2 metres away over my shoulder when I'm at my desk and it's inaudible + Works brilliantly with a UPS such as an APC, including USB link for controlled shutdown in the event of power loss. + Useful admin utility app available via the Apple App Store for iOS Negative - Not cheap. Well, OK, but you get what you pay for... - Drive bay covers are naff. This is my 3rd QNAP (TS-459-Pro II, TS-670) and the first to not have lockable drive bays. Instead the drive covers are click-to-close are they are *so* annoying... What happens is that over time, head movement on a drive will work the snap-to-close part of the cover lose, until it will vibrate. The sound is really penetrating if you're in the same room. Feels like pointless penny-pinching. You can push it down firmly to stop this, but, argh... - The ventilation holes are prone to clogging, even in relatively low-dust environments. I have my NAS on a shelf 120cm off the floor and I still have to check for dust and purge mine frequently [not an excessively dusty environment, just a study] Overall, the minor niggles are far out-weighed by the invisibly-good performance. A few tips:- 1. If you buy a second QNAP, their ability to back up from one to the other over a network is superb. Set up a multi-generation backup and run a 7-gen weekly cycle or a 31-gen monthly cycle with ease... 2. If you're not running in an air-conditioned space, check the temperature tolerances of your drives [WD claim my 12Tb Reds are safe to 75 centigrade (!) but I would never go that high and it pays to keep an eye on things 3. When you buy drives, buy a couple more than you need and put the spares on the shelf for emergencies. If you do get a head crash, you'll want to have a clean drive ready to swap in 4. Never buy all your drives in one order; split across 2-3 minimum. That way, if one parcel gets dropped, all your drives won't fail at the same time... 5. Set up a drive replacement rota [say max 4-5 years] and swap out a couple of drives every 5-12 months so none of your drives get really old. Buy a "bare drive" dock and use the old ones for off-line backups if you can't bear to throw them 6. Buy a good UPS and connect it up via USB to the NAS and set it up to give you a graceful shutdown if power is lost. Needed that twice now, boy was I glad I had it! 7. Log in to the user interface admin panel at least monthly to check for updates. I leave them 2-3 weeks before applying [let everyone else find the bugs...] but stay up to date on firmware to stay safe.
