Review: After my trusty, and at least 20 year old, plastic rotary cheese grater finally bit the dust, I decided to take the plunge and purchase this KitchenAid Prep slicer. I'd seen a few YouTube videos showing how simple it is to use, so I ordered one from HartsofStur yesterday. To my surprise, even though the free delivery was quoted by Amazon as 7 days, it came today :) To be honest, the only reason I wanted one of these was to grate cheese, as I'm finding that my slightly arthritic hands are finding this task more and more difficult as the years go by. The packaging and contents of this product just ooze quality, so although it isn't cheap, you can definitely see from the design of both, that this is a premium product. It comes with two graters, a medium and a coarse, plus a slicer, although like I said, I'd only be using the graters. Obviously, I had to give the grater its first outing, so shortly after the unboxing, I chose the coarser of the two graters, which fitted into the main housing with a satisfying click. It took me literally seconds to attach the device to my old KitchenAid Artisan mixer and I was just so pleasantly surprised at how easily and quickly it grated half a slab of my 1kg favourite mature cheddar. I just held a ziplock bag over the aperture of the device, so the grated cheese naturally fell into it. No mess, no fuss and I filled the bag in less than two minutes. I find if you leave any grated cheese in the fridge, it doesn't last that long, probably because of the now extra surface area plus all of the air surrounding each small piece, so I keep the grated cheese in the freezer and just use what I need and put the remainder back in the freezer. I'd seen some reviews that said that its better to put your slab of cheese in the freezer for about half an hour prior to grating but I didn't and I never had any issues with clumping etc. Maybe that's for softer cheese but my extra mature cheese was already firm enough. Cleaning the housing and rotary blades are simple and although it's only the three rotary blades that you can put in a dishwasher, I just gave everything a quick swill in the sink, which took no more than a couple of minutes. I highly recommend this KitchenAid Prep Slicer and if all you ever use it for is for grating cheese, you will be absolutely delighted with its performance. I certainly am.

Review: This is a handy attachment and I use it a lot - mainly for cheese. However softer cheddar doesn't fair so well in it and there are clumps that are always pushed away behind the grater when you've finished. The slicer works OK with certain vegetables but not good with anything too soft. I get the idea, but the problem with this is cleaning afterwards. IT IS NOT DISHWASHER SAFE. The grating drums can go in the dishwasher, but the rest can't. The double type plunger to push food into the grater is impossible to clean and I can't see why they designed it that way. If you do a lot of grating - go for it, otherwise. I wouldn't bother unless you like washing up. A bit of a disappointment from KitchenAid surprisingly.
