Review: My son's Ace 2 died after 3 years and this seemed like the logical replacement. He was really happy with the upgrade to the screen and the fact it'd automatically track his exercise. However, after a few days it stopped synchronising to his account. We deleted it and tried to set it up again but it just kept timing out. Eventually, we set it up on my phone and even that took a number of attempts before the process would complete. This has taken the shine off it somewhat and it'd be hard to wholeheartedly recommend. I'm a gadget freak and usually set things up without so much as a glance at the instructions but resolving this required a good understanding of the process to work out when it was failing. The fault lies somewhere between the watch and the Fitbit app. Before I got it working again I actually considered just sending it back and upgrading him to a Charge model but, what do you know, Fitbit won't allow you to link a kids' account to anything other than an Ace model. Which is weird because the Ace is essentially an Inspire that's been dumbed down. There are probably nonsense legal reasons why they can't track a child's heart rate or something (the hardware is there on the bottom of the Ace 3 but disabled) but it seems like the choice for kids has been artificially narrowed. Another downside is that I've been a Fitbit user for a decade and have a collection of the proprietary charging cables. From the Ultra to the Fitbit One, to the short-lived Ionic and the Sense 2 I use now, there's been a different cable destined for landfill and the Ace 3 is no different - the charging cables we have for the Ace 2 aren't compatible. It's incredibly wasteful and frustrating to have bought into an ecosystem that keeps starting from square one. So yeah, ultimately you could say I'm not super impressed by the Fitbit Ace 3. My son is happy with the functionality and when it works it works well but the synchronisation issues seem to be endemic and something Fitbit aren't minded to fix. Bear all that in mind and look for it to be on sale if you do want to risk it.
