Review: Having tried the Enduro ANC and been very impressed, I decided to try the Ally Plus II IEM. These new true-wireless IEM's are the update from the previous model, and priced above the budget end of the spectrum. The unboxing experience is very slick here, and similar to their larger brothers, with a cardboard sleeve that gets removed to give a black carboard box, which then opens to a nicely-done foam insert holding the case and IEM's (separately, for some reason). Any surface that even vaguely seemed to need it was covered in a peel-off sticker, which (while a little time consuming) at least meant that all parts feel and look very shiny and pristine. In the box there is also a selection of tips (more on that later) and a charging cable (although, the charging case does support qi wireless charging, which is a useful feature). The case itself is really neat and compact, and just rounded enough to feel sensible in a pocket. It also comes equipped with a clear-plastic viewing-window in the top, in case you... maybe forget whether you have them in your ears? I am not convinced by the utility of the design, but it looks quite cool... The body of the Ally Plus II is very nice, feels very solid and sturdy, with touch-sensitive control surfaces, so no physical buttons. They are quite large in size, but fit very nicely into my ears, without protruding too far and looking silly. One weird aspect is the ear-stems, which are oval in shape, rather than the more usual circular. I have not seen this on an IEM before, but did not notice any difference when they were actually in my ears. Also to note on physical specs, these are IPX4 rated, so should survive the occasional splash of water. They also have a feature that removing one earbud from your ear pauses the music. While this is quite a nice feature, I would have prefered to have the option to turn it off. There is a good selection of tip sizes, of the normal, rounded variety (in 5 sizes!), and also some sort-of flared, wedge-shaped tips. I was fully expecting these to be wildly uncomfortable, and was dead wrong. They form quite a gentle seal, and don't go as deep into the ear as some, and were actually very comfortable. They also managed to give a slightly more relaxed and airy sound, and to my ears a wider soundstage. On the flip side, the shallower penetration did lead to a lower level of isolation. It's a compromise, and of course, fit is so personal that the effect may be different with your ears. Connection with my phone was a cinch, as was connection to the Cleer+ app, which gives a degree of customisation over the button controls, as well as an EQ. It also gives the settings to turn off and on the ANC, as well as control the level of ambient noise which is allowed to pass in to the mix. This control is good, and would be handy if needing to retain awareness of your surroundings, however for my main uses, I just wanted the maximum isolation possible, so left it well alone for the most part. It should be noted that this does have a slight sonic artefact. With the ANC on, the background is not quite as “black”, however, if you are in an environment quiet enough to hear this, you probably aren’t in much need of the ANC anyway! Battery life is very good, with 10 hours with the ANC on, and 11 with it off, and then a further 2 full charges from the case. This is more than ample for casual listening, and the ability to wirelessly charge, or use USB-C into the back, means that it's easy to keep on top of the battery. Sound-wise, these have 10mm graphene dynamic drivers, and are definitely tuned with a 'fun', v-shaped sound signature in mind. The stand-out feature of the sound is the bass, which is tight and punchy, without being 'one-note' in character. Bass is punchy and tight, whilst also being tonally quite rich. Bass-lovers will really like this item. Midrange is also really good. Vocals sound warm and soulful as they need to, and instrument timbre is well presented. A track like “Elusive” by Scott Matthews gives a sparse accompaniment to his vocal, and these IEM’s really let that vocal sit comfortably in the space. High end. On my first listen, these initially seemed to be a bit strong in the high end for me, but after an hour or two of listening, this seemed to mellow somewhat (I have compared them side by side with a couple of other headphones, just to be sure it’s not just my ears getting used to them). Now they have settled down, I really like the high end. It is still not shy, and full of detail if the track contains it, but not overbearing. Overall, these are a really solid active-focused option for a true wireless IEM.
