Review: Time to weigh in with a review of these all singing, all dancing, bmi and fitness tracking scales. It was a weight off my mind to find the BF600, scales that quickly weigh me, judge me and then beam the data to the associated fitness tracking app. 'BF600' might sound like a droid extra from the death star, or an android bff, but what you have here is a relatively straightforward pair of digital scales that, should you want it, allow you to drill down into further layers of obsessive detail about your fitness and condition. It can help you set targets It gives you electric shocks of increasing severity the further you transgress your targets (ok so that last is a fib). It is slim and fairly light to carry (unlike me), easy to set up, and paired with my phone no problem. It works well, but hands up, I will only probably use it for the bare bones of its functionality, weighing myself and roughly keeping track. You get out what you put in, I suppose, but to use all its fitness features may require you to change your paid employment to part time, so obsessively time consuming does it seem. It's also pretty alarming to weigh yourself and for it not to stop at your weight, but to flash up a series of percentages and symbols, all of which seem alarming and I thought a caught a digital expression of disapproval and a tut-tut you can do better.

Review: Physically, this is an attractive looking and apparently well built set of scales. As is the modern trend, the top plate is a single sheet of toughened glass, with a low profile body containing the electronics bonded beneath. The display is simple but easy enough to read, and two metal plates sit at the outer edges, to make electrical contact with your skin. Measurements made by mine appear to be accurate compared to other devices I own. The expression "electrical contact" might sound alarming, but you won't feel anything - it's simply a low energy signal that is transmitted to your body to analyse your fat, water and muscle content. That said, this device is contra-indicated (meaning do not use it) if you are pregnant, suffer from heart defects or wear a pace maker or other implanted electronic device. I used to be skeptical about analyzing scales, and thought weight alone was sufficient. But after trying this type of scale it soon became apparent to me the usefulness. Knowing your muscle mass is especially important in weight training. And you might begin exercising and never lose weight, which with a regular scale can be discouraging. With this one though, it will let you know when your excess fat isn't just been shed, but being converted to additional muscle! As with all these consumer grade devices, don't expect it to be super-accurate, and don't rely on it for medical diagnosis or major decisions on health issues. For those things you need to seek a medical professional who has accesss to expensive calibrated and certified equipment. These scales can give you a useful indicator of when to seek such assistance though. The reason I have dropped several stars from my rating is the app. The latest update was released in August 2018 (last month) and has been universally condemned by users. Take a look at the Play store ratings and all the latest are one star. The app is buggy, hard to use and unattractive. More importantly for me, it's highly intrusive, requiring extensive permissions to operate! Basically, if you install it you give it full network access and permission for persons unknown to have unrestricted access to all your data, documents, SIM card contents, contacts list, your location, photos, camera, text messages, telephone calls - the whole lot! A set of scales does not need this, and it feels to me like an exercise in data mining. If you don't install the app it hobbles the device, and you lose all function apart from weighing. Your entire life is on your mobile phone - do you really want an anonymous person or company to be able to snoop through that whenever they feel like it? Would you leave your house door permanently unlocked and stick a sign outside saying "Please come in and look at all my private stuff while I'm out"? A re-think is needed, in my opinion. I want to be able to use this device without disclosing my entire life. I have a right to privacy, and so do you.
