Review: StarTech's 8 Port Rack Mount DVI USB KVM Switch (SV831DVIU) is a great device for fairly large server rack installs. It allows you to switch between multiple systems and use only one keyboard/mouse and other devices. The construction is very solid. It's a great piece. The buttons are firm and all the connections are solid. I tried this on multiple connection types. I often have trouble with KVM switches when various video sources are required. With straight DVI connections (with the servers have DVI), the SV831DVIU seemed to perform very well. When adapters or other video sources (HDMI) are used, I had mixed results. Some would display fine or display at odd resolutions. Some would also have trouble switching back and you could not obtain video back. It's a common issue among most KVM switches I've used. The keyboard and mouse support seemed to work flawlessly though. This is a great setup for certain environments and with some testing and troubleshooting, it could be a great product for your rack.
