Review: Ok, I know the question you are all looking for. Are this as good as the WH1000XM 4 / 5 at a much lower price and try as I might to find You Tube reviews there werent any (save one and he was on a jolly to Amsterdam from Sony). So I bought these the day they were released and here is the info you need. ( for ref as you can see from my Sony Link Buds S review Ive owned a pile of Bose and top end Sony head and ear phones . Lets kick of with sound-- its bright. My normal take on head/ earphones is that I want to say WOW that sounds nice, Im hearing tracks I Love in a new way, with more detail. This didnt quite happen with these ( and lets get the caveat out of the way now-- these are £100 and not the £250 to £350 of the other top end.) If I had to put it into words what was missing was 'warmth' of sound ( oh and another caveat is that I have not as yet worn in the drivers (burn in) for 30 hours ( which depending on where yo read is true or rubbish). the sound isnt bad like cheap earphones. I tinkered with the clear bass and this didnt make a huge difference. The EQ did a little in the Sony App. Let me try and summarise with sound. Its good, and with different tracks some will amaze you at how good it is for the price (note the lack of Sony LDAC codec on these-- just DHSEE is provided). I would put it at 80% of the top end headphones for 40% of the price. Next ANC (active noise cancelling)-- my go to in testing is white jet noise on You Tube. These did really well. Much better then expected. There is some hum but it is much reduced. With coffee shop chatter it also cuts out the low frequencies, but shrill speech is going to come through. The top end headphones have recognised this and now do a better job in this respect. So I would put the ANC at 85% of the top end for 40% of the price. One of the things you wont be thinking of is weight or rather how light these are. Just like the Sony Link Bud S Sony seems to be on a major weight reduction in their products and they are all the better for it. There is a a noticeable difference and the ear cups are ok-- even if they do make my ear surrounds warm (when will a manufacturer make these in leather or a material that 'breaths') So what's the verdict? These are better then they have a right to be at this price and Sony have done a really good job. If you dont travel that much £100 is a good price to pay for good quality ANC and nice quality sound. But if you want to drive that 80% and 85% (above) to 95%-100% and not have the EQ control then another (approx) £100 will get you the Bose QC 45 ( the update on the 35). Pays your money and takes your choice. For me personally as I listen to more music on the Ch720N's Id take the Bose. Too many tracks sound ok ( and the others very good).
