Review: I scoured the internet for a way to make decent recordings of myself and friend Playing guitars and singing in my basement The mic settings allow for many different recording scenarios and it has produced very nice balanced recording of our music session (The video is a nice bonus) We have a PA for singing, Electric guitar and BASS or 2 Electric guitars The mic does a great job of capturing the complete sound, we are very impressed

Review: I want to use my iPhone 7 Plus to do more video recording, and the Shure MV88 seemed like an ideal way to capture better audio. Indeed, it is a very versatile microphone that allows recording in several modes: Variable width XY, Mid-Side, Cardioid (mono), and so on. The mic is configured using an easy to use, free downloadable app from Shure. The app includes decent features such as compression, equalization, and a limiter. I'm happy with quality of the audio the microphone delivers... it's greatly superior to the builtin iPhone mics. Also, the build quality of the device seems very good, with a primarily metal body that feels quite solid. The mount between the base and the capsules allows great versatility in the way the microphone is oriented, something that other lightning port microphones lack. That said, in my opinion there is a critical design flaw that makes this microphone impractical for video. As the microphone plugs directly into the lightning port, there is no way to use it and charge the phone at the same time. Unfortunately, video drains the battery quite quickly. My iPhone 7 Plus can last just a bit under two hours with the Shure plugged in. Seriously, how difficult could it have been for Shure to include an additional lightning port on the base of the microphone so it could be attached to an external battery, to allow charging while simultaneously using the mic? The lack of this key feature (so simple yet inexplicably missing) kills it for me. I would like to give this microphone 5 stars, but as it stands, I cannot recommend it for video recording. It is simply impractical. The iPhone's internal battery will only last a couple of hours while shooting video, and so using the Shure MV88 is just too limiting. The microphone may be good for other applications that do not require as much battery power as video.
