Review: Really loving the Philips Hue Econic so far. It looks smart with a classic yet modern appearance, and the quality seems really good. The smart features work well, and we can't wait for Halloween to try out the various colour scenes ????????

Review: UPDATE: November 2019 The lamp has been installed now since March 2019 and the case which I guess is turning white and for such an expensive fitting I would expect a better choice of materials or better protection from the elements (30 minutes walk to the sea). My old porch lamp also made by Philips looked a lot better and had been installed for perhaps fifteen years. I have added some new photos. UPDATE: End The weather in the UK has been so windy that I have been testing my one in the living room wired to a 13 amp plug. To go with this I bought the outdoor “Hue” motion sensor and that was a lot easier to install only needing one screw in the wall and no wiring. Thus I have been able to judge how many false triggers the light gets (foxes and other four legged creatures in the area) and also check its power consumption. The lamp uses about 0.8 watt all the time and 16 watts if set to maximum brightness in white. Anyway today it went on the wall. The rear mounting box is round with only a single rear cable entrance. It is also tricky to get level and what I did was put 2 x 4mm nuts on the studs from the rear box (to keep them rigid) and then used a spirit level on the threaded parts as these are at the sides of the round wall mounting box. Once that was up I put some sealing compound on the screws and on the rubber grommet provided. You have to hold the fitting up while you connect the three wires (it needs an earth) and then put on the spring washers followed by the nuts. Then of course power it on. My one did a software update in the living room and from what I can see as with other “Hue” lamps that it lets you set the power on status (they used to always come on full brightness). Anyway, I have been out in the dark and am pleased with the light coverage which is a lot better than my old lamp plus of course being off the optional motion sensor it will use less power and come on dimmer (if triggered) after 23:00 (you can of course change that time). Changing my garden one is the next challenge...
