Review: I like photography and videography. I am a hybrid shooter. I’ve recently owned a Lumix G9 and £1500 of lenses, a Sony ZV1 and now this. This is the best for my use. It’s not much bigger than a ZV1 if you have the ‘Ulanzi’ ZV1 lens mod and a cage- both necessities IMO on that camera. It is tiny compared to the G9 of other LUMIX micro 4/3rds. The autofocus, unlike the Lumix cameras, is top notch. Not quite as good as Sony but up there. The ergonomics and useability of the camera are amazing, the best on the market possibly. Having experienced this, the way it fits in the hand, it’s switches and dials, and the menus, this really cannot be under estimated. Sony pales into insignificance on this score. Video quality is brilliant. As good as a Lumix professional video centric camera and substantially better than a ZV1. Photographic quality is superb- better than the G9, which was said to be the more photographic element of the higher end Lumix line ( but still based on a video centric body). The Nikon absolutely pops, just leaving it on auto and JPEGs, the photos are amazing. Auto on video is really spot on as well. Whilst you can of course customise the picture as you want, there’s few cameras in my experience perform consistently as good on this on auto. The kit lenses are great, particularly the small pancake zoom. Good picture quality for a kit lens. Of course, could be faster at f3.5 but…. The camera is phenomenal at high ISOs in low light. It can virtually see in the dark even at F3.5 and still produce half decent results at massive ISOs in both photo and video. Get a 1.4 lens on this and you have a very low light camera, basically darkness. Even with the kit lens you will have mo issues getting good results in nighttime street and indoor photography. The I built mic is absolutely phenomenal on this camera- best in market I’d suggest. In fact it makes my Rode Video Micro redundant I’d say, albeit it does pick up some of the internal camera ‘whooshing’ noise if you listen carefully in silent environments- you don’t notice that in real world use. They always said the Sony ZV1 I built mic was decent but having tested side by side (see Wakeywarrior on YouTube) there is no comparison. A few downsides- it could do with in body image stabilisation but the kit lenses have it built in, and it’s just as good stabilisation with the VR lenses on as a Sony ZV1. The Lumix has fantastic stabilisation though, best in the market, but of course they are more expensive with a much bigger body. If this is an issue for you and it isn’t me- it only films 4k for around 30 mins continuously but will do 1080 for 2+ hours. The little Smallrig wind muff should come with it, but at least it is £10. Overall there is no perfect camera on the market but if you want a small compact which turns out fantastic video and pictures, and has some flexibility, and you’d like to get it in a coat or, say, cargo short pocket, this in my view is the market leader currently. Nikon is quality but have lost some market share to Sony etc and are not as adept at advertising and social media, which is why this beauty is currently going under the radar a bit.

Review: Zur kurzen Erklärung: Wir fotografieren seit Jahren ausschließlich mit Nikon in allen Studios. Im Videobereich haben wir uns, nach einem kurzen Intermezzo bei Canon, für Sony entschieden. Diesen Trend hatte Nikon damals leider komplett verpennt. Jetzt versucht man auf diesem Sektor aufzuholen. Schauen wir mal: Foto: Ich möchte das hier nicht weiter ausführen, einfach, weil es nichts neues gibt. Die Fotos haben die gleiche Qualität wie die der Z50. Diese ist durchwachsen, nicht schlecht, aber auch nicht herausragend. Ich möchte mich auf die reine Videofunktion beschränken. Auch weil Nikon die Z30 explizit als Vlogging Kamera bewirbt. Video: Zugegeben, es gibt mehr Vorteile als Nachteile. Letztere sind für mich allerdings gravierend. Fangen wir aber mit den positiven Aspekten an. Das Display ist ein komplett bedienbares Touchdisplay. Es lässt sich also alles einstellen. Bei Sony ist das eher seltener zu finden. Dazu ist es seitwärts dreh- und schwenkbar. Die verbauten Stereo Mikrofone haben eine sehr gute Qualität! Im Vlogger-Kit sind sogar die Dead Cats mit im Lieferumfang. In diesem Kit allerdings nicht. Die gibt's von Smallrig nachzukaufen. Die Aufnahmedauer ist auch nicht mehr auf 30 Minuten begrenzt. Hier kann man jetzt 125 Minuten durchgehend filmen. Interessant ist das natürlich für alle Konzertfilmer. Übrigens war die Beschränkung schon damals für Profifilmer auch nicht sonderlich relevant, da man das schon lange mit externen Recordern (Atomos etc.) umgehen konnte. Nun geht's halt auch intern - vorausgesetzt die Speicherkarte lässt das zu und auch der Akku! Der Akku wird leider ohne externes Ladegerät geliefert und muss somit mittels USB-C Kabel in der Kamera geladen werden. Hier punktet Nikon aber auch wieder, denn man kann mit eingestecktem Ladekabel weiter filmen und zugleich laden! Ein enormer Vorteil. Denn hier muss nicht zwangsläufig ein neuer, teurer Akku gekauft werden - eine Powerbank tut's auch. Der Autofokus funktioniert mit Mensch-Tier-Augenerkennung sehr gut und nimmt sich kaum etwas mit den Platzhirschen von Sony. Gut gemacht! Aufnahmen funktionieren in 4k mit 30-25-24 fps. Klar, 60 fps wären noch besser aber damit lässt sich auch schon was anfangen. Eine Slowmotion ist - leider nur bei Full HD - auch mit 120 fps an Bord. Zugegeben, wirklich brauchbare SloMo's fangen bei uns erst mit 240 fps an, den Vlogger wird's nicht stören nehme ich an. Was wirklich erstaunlich ist, es wurde eine Timecodefunktion in der Z30 verbaut. Sehr unüblich in dieser Preisklasse. Und genau diese Profifunktion macht mir den Übergang zu den negativen Eigenschaften dieser Kamera relativ einfach. Negativ: Da wird einerseits eine professionelle Timecode Option verbaut, andererseits "verpasst" man den Einbau einer Kopfhörerbuchse! Nun gibt es ja einige Y-Tuber, die behaupten, dass das irrelevant wäre. NEIN! Ist es ganz und gar nicht. Sicher kann man über die Pegelanzeige für Audio in den meisten Fällen erkennen, dass alles nach Plan läuft. Zumindest bei den eingebauten oder per Kabel angeschlossenen Mikrofonen. Nun der "Worst Case": Ihr wollt ein anständiges Interview mit einer Sendeanlage (Lavaliermikrofon) aufnehmen. Besonders in Ballungsgebieten kommt es dabei bei Drahtlosanlagen sehr oft zu Störgeräuschen. Zumeist von Handys aber auch von Mikrowellen, Leuchtstofflampen etc. ausgelöst (alles schon erlebt). Diese Störgeräusche schlagen auf dem "Mäusekino" kaum aus und daher bemerkt man sie nicht. Nun geht ihr, zufrieden mit dem Bildmaterial, nach Hause und stellt fest... WTF??? Tja, in den meisten Fällen lässt sich so ein Interview nicht gleich wieder anberaumen. Daher ist eine Abhörmöglichkeit zwingend nötig. Es sei denn, ihr nutzt ohnehin einen externen Audiorecorder, denn die haben ALLE eine Monitoring Funktion. Nächster Punkt wäre die Ausgabe der Bilddateien. Denn die erfolgt auch hier leider nur in 8 Bit 4:2:0! Intern sowie auch über einen externen Recorder. Standard wäre 2022 eigentlich mindestens 10 Bit für eine Videokamera. Um den Unterschied kurz zu erklären: 8 Bit kann Millionen Farben. 10 Bit kann Milliarden! Das ist extrem in der Nachbearbeitung wichtig. Colorgrading geht auch mit 8 Bit, Colorcorrection wird aber erst bei 10 Bit interessant. Abgesoffene Tiefen und überbelichtete Höhen lassen sich bei 10 Bit super korrigieren. Bei 8 Bit ist das Zeitverschwendung. So verwundert es auch nicht, dass Nikon keinerlei Log-Profile in der Z30 integriert hat. Hier filmt man in einem angeblichen "Flachprofil". Ja, wenn es denn eins wäre, wäre ich sehr glücklich. Die Tiefen sind zwar etwas angehoben, allerdings sind die Lichter dadurch sehr schnell ausgebrannt. Flachprofil geht definitiv anders! Wir haben auf unseren Monitorrecordern eigens angefertigte Flachprofile die sich bei der Aufnahme schon vorschalten. So bekommen wir sogar bei nur 8 Bit brauchbares Material aus den Kameras. Für den Laien sind das allerdings "böhmische Dörfer" und damit unpraktikabel. Fazit: Die Kamera ist prinzipiell ok. Nur, sie als Videokamera anzupreisen ist ein wenig zu vermessen. Da liegt, leider, Sony deutlich vorn. Allerdings, wenn man vom reinen Vlogging ausgeht, geht auch die Videofunktion völlig in Ordnung. Zumal die Mikrofone deutlich besser klingen als bei Sony. Auch im digitalen Bildstabilisator punktet Nikon vor Sony, da letztere den deutlich höheren Cropfaktor aufzuweisen hat. Wer sich kaum mit Bildbearbeitung beschäftigen will, kann hier absolut zuschlagen. Vier Sterne von mir!
