Review: I'm used to paying a whole lot of money for lenses for my main (Nikon) kit and always been a believer in you get what you pay for. Now don't get me wrong I'm not going to compare this little lens with my Nikon 70-210mm F2 at four or five times the price and say it is anywhere near equal in quality, but for a general purpose 'walk-about' lens it seems to perform pretty well especially at the price. In case you're asking why I'd want a compact system camera when I have professional level photographic kit, the answer is simple; I wanted something smaller and lighter to take on a trip to South America and frankly your average compact simply isn't up to the task. Having tried other systems I chose to buy Panasonic. The 14-42mm lens that came with my G system is close to excellent, but I wanted to extend the range and the 45-200mm lens seemed a likely candidate. As it turns out it is as I've said excellent value for money. Results are crisp with very little edge distortion. The in-built stabilisation makes the lens usable in low light conditions. My only real criticism is the zoom ring feels a little 'gritty' and lacks the smoothness I'm used to. Overall I'd recommend this lens to anyone with a compatible body operating on a budget; it is well worth the money and would make a great addition to your kit. Just one other thing to add: the lens I received is French stock and NOT a UK model. This doesn't matter too much to me, but buyers should be aware they are buying foreign stock products.

Review: I have a full frame DSLR and an Olympus PEN for travel shots; my wife has a Lumix G2 so this lens made sense for us to share. I mention the SLR because because for those thinking of getting smaller gear instead of full size it might be relevant. Firstly, this is quite a big lens compared to other micro 3/4rds lenses - much bigger and heavier than the kit zooms. With a reach equivalent to a 400mm in 35mm terms, this is to be expected. However, it is very well made and considering the reach the reach the actual size is not too bad. The image quality is very good - I've read some reviews that say it lacks contrast but I don't think this is the case. So far then, on both the Pen and the G2 it scores really well. So why 4 and not 5 stars? The OIS image stabilisation works, but not as well as the 70-300mm zoom on my Canon. At 200mm (400mm equiv. on a full frame) it's quite hard to keep it steady without high shutter speeds, which requires good light or high ISO. Having said that it's the only game in town as far as long zooms go for micro 4/3rds; I'm glad we have a good one from Panasonic!
