Review: Firstly: I've had this for just 6 days and it was faulty on arrival so I'm sending it back to Amazon because otherwise, it's an absolute faff if I want to replace it as I have to contact Freesat themselves and deal with their customer service to get a replacement going. I don't want to chance with Freesat trying to get me to keep this faulty box by them asking me to do this and that with a faulty box in an effort to keep it rather than a straight swap out. I also don't want them keeping records on my purchase details either, which is another matter. The fault on this box: Since the day it arrived this boxes HDD keeps spinning up and stopping suddenly when the box is switched off. It makes a high pitched squeak and then a tinking sound when the HDD comes to a sudden stop. Rinse and repeat. I've done a factory reset but that hasn't stopped this. Only now when I switch the box on it starts to boot up, suddenly stops, switches off, reboots for a second time and then will switch on. Apart from the first 3 times where it acted normally it now does this as standard on rebooting. Picture quality: The picture quality of this box is excellent, I've given it 5 stars. I have a standard LNB installed (which is about 7 years old) which was for sky HD until I swapped it out for a Humax a year later. I also only have a cheap LCD Panasonic HD tv about 10 years old (about to upgrade to 4k come new year). I've noticed that the standard channel 4 is much much sharper than before even though the HD channel is no more. All other channels are much sharper on the standard LNB and this 4k Freesat. I am also going to be upgrading to WLNB as I only have a duel capacity on this quad capacity box. In that respect, I am still able to record 2 programmes and watch 1 recording like I did my old dead Humax. I will need a WLNB satellite receiver if I want to record 4 programs at a time. Easy to use? Yes, but always with extra steps and as you can see from my images the menu is exceptionally dumb and not easy on the eyes. Any dead brain can use the menu as it's so utterly simplistic. However, it's a disappointment because the menus have no style, no design, it's flat, boring, I hate the colour usage, no graceful way to get around (everything has extra clicks and steps) from one thing to another uninviting and the contrast so high it hurts my eyes. I expected way more for the price of the box. The most annoying thing about the menus is the INFORMATION section about the film or program. You have to go into this menu to read all of it because it cuts it off with it filling up the designated space. So if I was looking to see what series and episode a program is on then I would have to use this feature... If it actually worked all the time. Sometimes you get partially the information and then it goes blank when trying to get it all. Then sometimes you get all of it then have to exit out of it. It seems to be changed related. Like on E4 I couldn't see what episode or series was showing using this feature but could see film information on another channel. Remote Control: Agggh is the short answer to this question. It's small and compact for sure but my problem with it is that it's not very intuitive regarding the way it's set out. On the plus side, the home button is large and brings up my first image menu which is a TV guide, recordings, reminders, on-demand, search, setting and help. THERE IS NO SEPARATE RECORDINGS BUTTON to take you straight to your recordings from tv. This is a massive oversight in my opinion considering I barely watch live tv. They could have easily of taken out the SEARCH button and replaced it with RECORDING considering the box has 2 TB worth of storage for RECORDING. What a clanger to drop! Also the remote has BBC Iplayer and ITV Hub buttons which I will never use because I don't use those services. They are redundant at the moment anyway as they don't have these apps yet. The buttons themselves feel clunky, awkward, loose, much much cheaper than the OK and outer arrow keys. You need to push all the other buttons way down before you get that responsive click. I don't know why this is like that but it feels cheap. The OK button at the centre and the outer arrow keys are the only responsive buttons on this remote. These buttons feel much more sturdy in comparison to every single other one on the remote! Why? To fast forward past adverts on this remote takes much more clicks. On the Humax, you could push the double fast forward twice and skip the entire adverts straight back to program. On this, there are between 4 and 6 clicks of the arrow keys on the outside of the OK button (centre). Whilst the position of these keys are placed correctly within the feel of the remote the fact it only fast forwards just 1 minute at a time is a letdown. I feel I would wear this key out pretty quickly. Some of the keys are tiny and whilst I see they were trying to keep the remote quite compact I just feel like they could have used some of the superfluous space on the remote to make use of the space for the keys you will use often. For me these would be: RECORDINGS (which is absent) TV GUIDE (which is too small and poorly positioned) BACK (which is too small and poorly positioned) EXIT (which is too small and poorly positioned) HOME (not sure about the name but you get the main menu for everything). The Box: The actual box is lightweight and compact, (I like this) although the covering itself is a mat black plastic which does feel cheap (I don't like this). However, the box itself is not going to be on display per se so in not overly fussed about it so long as it does the job. The on light is blue which isn't too bright or distracting (where it is right now). There is no colour change when recording. I don't mind this but as I was used to the Humax changing to red to signal recording is in process, I did go check it was happening. The box is red to signal the box is switched off. The colour changes to purple when in the process of switching on. Delivery: It arrived in 2 days which is great but it wasn't boxed securely. I.e. they sent the package in the box that would come off the shelf with just a label on and there isn't much in the way of protection when posting. I'm honestly not surprised the box arrived faulty. It's a hard drive and if that's me I would be treating it as such rather than just slapping a label on it and sending it on its way through an automated system that's throwing that box around like confetti! Also, where was the Faraday cage to protect the HDD from any magnetic components along the way? Conclusion: I am going to give this box one more go because the picture quality was so good in the hope the software is sorted out. I will put up with a terrible remote in the hope some other company makes a much better replacement. I feel this box has great potential but it really isn't there yet. I'm not sure if it's value for money considering I will have to update the LNB to a WLNB to use all its current features but that said if I want 4K I'm going to need the kit for it one way or another. As the menu is right now then I would say not worth the money currently. The menu and remote really do let this box down but these things can be improved on down the line so I'm not willing to write them off just yet. I could write more about this box and will come back and update at some point.
