Review: I had repeatedly tried and failed to achieve Gigabit ethernet speeds on my MBA M1 when using third-party ethernet adapters (Apple doesn't make its own USB-C to Ethernet adapter). After much searching turned out the cause was chipset issues in the third-party ethernet adapters. Then someone suggested combining this [Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter] with Apple's own [Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter]. Hey presto! Stable and consistent Gigabit ethernet speeds every time with no slowdowns or dropouts. Sure the combo looks a bit goofy hanging out the MBA and it ain't a cheap solution but it works.

Review: So this is a legit Apple product that works... but let me get my HyperDrive rant out first... (which, please understand is a totally different product to this!) I don't get why HyperDrive and other dongle suppliers don't seem to include Thunderbolt 3 adapters on their range of products. I bought a HyperDrivDrive dongle costing £125 and it did have a slot for my Thunderbolt 3 monitor - so I was delighted.... well, that is until I tried to use it and totes didn't work! - I complained to HyperDrive who told me that the slot was actually a 'display port' adapter.... IE not for Thunderbolt display.... So, although I was angry with HyperDrive, I'm pretty upset with Apple too as it transpires that 'DisplayPort' is different to Thunderbolt 3 even though the plugs are exactly the same. And hey, it' worth looking at my apparent mistake this way.... I was using a 'port' on my laptop for my Apple 'display'.... so how come an identical plug called 'display port' doesn't work? - So no thanks to Hyper Drive and no thanks to Apple.... So now back to this product.... who comes to my rescue? Apple do. So at this point I'm feeling like I'm part of some sort of con / racket. I buy a £1000 Apple monitor and then I have the audacity to want to use it with my new Apple laptop. Despite the huge array of dongles out there for MacBook Pros of the USB-C persuasion (IE all of them now), you don't seem to find many or even ANY of them that will support TB3 who knows why!? SO...... anyway, I bought this little Apple adapter beauty and it works perfectly. So you might think I would now have no grumbles..... Oh wait.... but I do!.... and actually this grumble is so big, it led me to write this review to get it off my chest.... the cost of this apple dongle is SO enormous! - I bought a £3500 laptop.... practically had to remortgage my life to buy it.... then I find that I have to buy a whole array of dongles so that it can work with all the things I already have. I wasn't too upset when I sprung for the £125 HyperDrive dongle since I was expecting to have to do this.... and it did cover most of my adapter needs.... but this one was the wild card... and I'm not impressed that Apple are charging £40 for this. Because of cost alone, my review comes in at three stars. TBH they're lucky to get this! Yes buy this.... coz you'll have to. There's no other solution. Get ripped off... because it's your only option.
