Review: I've only used it once to make fairy cakes. They turned out perfectly. Looking forward to getting good use out of it. Great addition to the kitchen!

Review: This sounds like it should be a really good and useful addition to the kitchen armoury of gadgets, but unfortunately we found that it is just too limited in what it can do. If you have read other reviews you are probably wondering what I mean, because there are some recipes in the instruction book and lots more available on the app for the machine. I think that we are not really the target audience for this machine, we are a couple in their sixties and I think that it is aimed more at young families or even students, young families because it would be fun making little cakes with children, and students because it negates the need for an oven. Indeed, experienced bakers would probably find this machine very limiting. The main thing that we found disappointing was that it will only make cakes (or other desserts) in the included moulds, which are a rectangular aluminium tray (23cm x 19cm), the round moulds (7cm diameter) or the mini loaf or bar tins (7.5cm x 6cm) it holds 6 of each of the round or loaf moulds. It is worth noting that this is really just a mini oven, preset with various programmes for cakes, individual and to share, meringues, molten middle puddings and dairy desserts/mousses. All the other preparation steps, like creaming butter and eggs or whipping eggs need to be carried out exactly the same as for traditional cake baking in a normal oven. The one area where it is really useful is for molten middle puddings, where the preset programme really does give good results for what are normally very tricky desserts to make. There are a couple of things that we really don't like though, firstly getting the rectangular mould out of the machine when it is hot is very difficult, the handle of the mould sit flush with the side of the machine, so there is no room to get fingers under it to lift it out, especially as oven gloves are needed because it is so hot. Secondly it would be very nice to have a window in the lid so that the progress of the bake can be seen and finally it is very awkward to store, the unit itself isn't too big, but then there are the moulds to store as well, and they do need to be stored carefully or else the non-stick coating will be damaged. On a final note, the cake recipes that we have tried are over sweet and the cooking times leave the cakes over baked (crispy muffins anyone?) So although I really wanted to like this product, I was left rather underwhelmed and if I had paid the £179.99 price on Amazon, I think that I would have felt as though I had been ripped off. I hope that you now understand why I have given it 3 stars. Thank you for reading my review. The price quoted is correct at the time of writing. I hope that you've found this review interesting and helpful, if you have please consider giving it a 'helpful' vote.
