Review: I have purchased this Panasonic DP-UB450EB-K model because I did not need any internet apps or smart features, my TV is an android TV so I have everything I want there. This little Panasonic is great at playing discs and USB content, the picture quality it excellent, it has Dolby Atmos and DTS audio capability, every file type I tested from various sources on an external HDD worked perfectly. The menu layout for playing content from an external HDD is clean and simple, it does not make thumbnails for each video, which usually takes too long to fill out on other players, I think this is better. There is only one USB 2.0 port on the front of this model, but it can play any content up to 4K from an external HDD, the HDD should be formatted to NTFS for best performance. An interesting point to note is that the USB port is rated to take up to a 4TB HDD, my Seagate 5TB HDD worked just fine, so maybe it can take even larger capacity drives. The Panasonic DP-UB450EB-K is a basic no frills player but what it does, it does it very well, and at just £179 it's a real bargain, I gave it 5 stars, I would definitely recommend this player.

Review: So so so so much has been said about this 4k Bluray disk player and media streamer. A lot of reviewers have said this is the best player on the market past present and future. With the demise of the Oppo 203, everyone has been on the lookout for the 4k player to beat or at least rival it. Many have tried but most have failed. Current wannabees include players from Reavon and Sony X800M2, but neither of these has the chops to even rival the Panasonic UB820 let alone the infamous Oppo 203! The UB820 is the younger sibling of the UB9000. The UB9000 costs around £1000. The UB20 costs around £350. The UB9000 has an improved DAC to allow its musical perversion to take place. It has XLR output sockets and a much sturdier metal housing compared to the anemic UB820 which not only feels cheap and plasticky, but it thoroughly feels cheap and cheaper plasticky than anything I have ever owned. It feels so cheap that I feel it will disintegrate into a million pieces if i ever decide to spin a disk in it. So, if we take away the metal housing, the DAC for hi-end music applications, and the XLR outputs, we are then basically left with the UB820. They are the same as at the level of what they were designed to do, spin 4k disks and offer the HDR optimizer tools and HCX chipset. On paper then, the UB820 is an absolute steal compared to the UB9000. You have to ask though is the UB9000 overpriced then? The answer has to be a resounding YES SIR INDEEDY. The UB9000 is so much so overpriced that it makes the current inflation situation feel like a walk in the park. I'm trying to say then if you have not got it so far, is that the UB820 in fact is not a steal. It is still overpriced for what you get and the other players masquerading as something special need to be ashamed too! The big problem is this. physical media is beginning to wane. Disks are just not getting made at the rate of the previous generation of DVDs. People are generally watching content through internet streams. People don't have much space to hold physical media. The UB820 does have a few streaming apps, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, and BBC IPlayer. Apps generally are sparse on this device and don't hold your breath on expecting a spew of fancy apps to appear over the coming years too. They won't and they haven't. This player is aimed squarely at the purist who wants to have exacting control over video and audio output settings. The detail of control is impressive, especially with the inclusion of HDR10 and Dolby Vision out of the box. The unique selling point though is the HXC processor and HDR optimizer, both are chipset processors which do the hard work of making your media look better than otherwise possible. That's what you are paying for essentially with this package and probably why it gets rave reviews. I posit the notion that if you are not going to be purchasing more physical media in the future and want to consume content through streaming apps, then even the UB820 (and UB9000 or any other disk-based player) are not what you should be using. A FireTV stick or Apple TV, and even the Nvidea Shield should be your go-to options tbh. If you want to spin your old disks and play some new purchases, I still think this is overkill and a much cheaper disk player which would do basically the same thing but without the tinkering tools of an HDR OPTIMISER and an HCX chip. You would probably spend more time tinkering than watching the content. Look, if you have a high-end setup like a 65inch play 4k TV which supports Dolby Vision and HDR, and want to see content at its very very best, then maybe the UB820 is worth a punt. Definitely, there is no need to ever purchase a UB9000. unless you have money burning in your pockets and don't know what to do with it, then go ahead and make Panasonic rich I guess. The UB820 has lots to merit is. It is Dolby Vision compliant. It has super HDR optimizing tools. It has rock-solid disk playback, but, and there is a but, it just feels all but outdated in so many ways. Crucially, with the take up of Ultrawide monitors and displays offering scope viewing in 21:9 format, Blu-rays won't display on it in full 21: 9. you still get black bars top and bottom, even in Ultrawide! I have an ultrawide, the UB820 will not do aspect ratio shifting and display on the whole screen. There are bars on top and bottom. Unfortunately, the old and creaking Bluray specifications just don't align with Ultrawide, and a glaring faux pax and more to the point, and indication the Bluray format itself is dying right in front of our eyes (saved only by steelbook collectors). There is some hope though for this little kitten, the UB820. If you own a projector whether it be 1080p or 4K, then with the bigger picture on display, the opportunity to tinker with video and audio to get that sweet spot and look and feel both visually and aurally will be most welcome. And indeed in my home cinema, that is exactly what it does and why I bought it in the first place. It's another tool to have to make your content that bit special on the big screen. I don't use this with my 4K TV though as it has a lot of options to tinker with and having the UB820 just complicates it even further. Get this if you have a projector and a big screen, then you can tinker to your heart's delight, otherwise, I'd buy something in the £100 quid range and be done with it. You'll barely notice the difference and save yourself the money (which you will need for the heating bills - good luck with that one). As a side note, I found that the fan is not obtrusive as perhaps some other reviewers have mentioned. This came with the most up-to-date firmware and Dolby Vision and HDR options were fully implemented. Is it an essential purchase? No. Is it good to have if you have a specialized cinema/theatre room, yes definitely (but for heavens sake don't go and spend your money on the UB9000, your just p**sing it down the drain)
