Review: There is no doubt that the Vertuo system creates one of the best, if not the best, crema in coffee machine standards. There are different cup sizes (!) yet this is reflected in the size of capsule - bigger capsules, bigger costs. It's also got a great recycling system and is very quite for a machine. These four features are soon outweighed by the following caveats. I got my machine on an AW special, so it was grossly discounted (£40) versus a new machine cost (£200). Being a special it didn't come with a starter pack of capsules, but the 50 free capsule offer was still valid, with no strings attached, so that's a well appreciated plus point, thanks Nespresso! After the first week of sporadic operation, week two the machine worked as it should, then following weeks up until it's return, it would not brew drinks to the specific time, it would just keep running! Sometimes it would only run for ten seconds on a 230ml capsule, resulting in pressing the button 5+ times for repeat extractions (and wasted time). It was hardly ideal, and I suspect a fault with the machine. So this experience aside, there's another two caveats: The "freebies" part 1: the aeroccino is NOT included in the box and is available on redemption only, by entering into a 12 month minimum term subscription plan, that costs £17/month to begin with. That £17 becomes store credit, with the subscription you get an additional 10% "free"...but £18.70 loosely translates to about 30 or 40 capsules, enough for one drink a day, assuming your machine works! Freebies, part 2: two months free again means 1st and 6th month of said subscription effectively keeping you in your subscription for at least half the year, a total of almost £120 spent on coffee pods you have to drink. This is fine if you know you are you to use it, and/or can build up a collection of pods over the months if you don't use it as much. Secondly the Vertuo capsules can only be bought from Amazon or Nespresso directly. The latter is much cheaper, and has more choice, but starts at around £5 for ten capsules, up to around £6.70 for bigger, longer drinks. I think some pods are even 74p per pod, and you have to buy them as a minimum of ten pods at a time. In a lot of cases you can pick up an acceptably used machine for around £40, sometimes even less, but this is a false economy. It is the standard "razor and blades" model, and you're locked into buying only Nespresso only pods, adding further costs. Apparently there are ways around the barcode scanner, but for ease of operation, capsule flexibility, sheer range, you'd be better picking up a standard Nespresso machine. Incidentally, I got a refurbished Essenza Mini with an Aeroccino (in the same box) for a mere £55 elsewhere, and the two sizes of cup it produces (espresso 40ml and lungo 120ml), I am more than happy with that purchase. Bottom line: get a standard machine.
