Review: I bought this genuine Canon ES68 lens hood to use with my genuine Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens with a Hoya UV filter and everything fits securely and as you would expect from genuine Canon products. Some reviewers have complained about poor fit etc but I can only assume they have either ordered the wrong items, purchased fake products, or are unable to fit the lens hood and or filter correctly. The lens hood can also be fitted backwards (over the lens) for storing in your camera bag. Excellent product, good price and good retailer so definitely recommended.

Review: This lens hood is in two pieces. The mounting ring has a thread fitting, rather than bayonet, and the hood itself clips subtly onto a groove in the mounting ring. (This fact is not mentioned in the product description.) There are a number of problems. 1. The mounting ring lengthens the physical lens by about 5mm. While this doesn't seem much, it can make the difference between fitting in somewhere and not fitting. 2. The thread appears to be very poor quality. It's difficult to line up with the lens mounting thread, and does not turn smoothly - there is a rasping feel to it, and the force needed to turn it varies as you go. 3. I normally use a (Hoya) UV filter as a protector. According to the lens manual, the lens hood mounting ring should be attached to the lens, and any filters to the ring. However, if I want to avoid problem 1, I need to detach it, but then I need to fiddle with the filter as well. 4. Attaching the hood to its ring is extremely difficult and hard to align - when it clicks, it really feels like luck. 5. Reverse mounting the hood for storage is equally awkward. In this case, too, on the EF-S f/1.8 50mm lens, this obstructs the manual focus ring and makes manual focussing impossible. In general, I think the Canon accessories are of a quality which is worth the "extra" compared with their non-Canon replacements. But, frankly, looking at both the design and usability, and at the finish of this item, it doesn't feel like a Canon product, and is definitely *not* worth 18 quid. I've returned it. .
